A-Wing
is the oldest of Maitland Gaol's cell blocks. The first 40 convicts
to arrive were housed here and over the years, some of the gaol's
most infamous inmates. The Backpacker murderer - Ivan Milat, spent
time in tiny cell number 1 and cell 12 was where Charles Hienze,
the last man to be executed, was kept. Cell number 11 was called
"The Black Hole" and was used as a punishment and isolation cell.
Late
that afternoon as the sun began to disappear over the prison walls,
two members of the film crew and I wandered off to A-Wing to inspect
cell number 1. As we entered the cell block, I noticed that the
atmosphere had changed dramatically. Although it was still light,
the sun was no longer streaming through the large barred windows.
From the eerie shadows at the opposite end of the block I could
hear what sounded like men whispering.
All three of us heard the sound and couldn't possibly have imagined
it. We know that the building was empty, so who could the whispering
we heard have come from?
Are
you brave enough to spend a night in one of Australia's most
haunted gaols?
