Update December 2001

I participated in my second tunnel watch along with a group of about 20 people in December 2001.

When we arrived at the tunnel it was still quite light, so a few of us headed off to explore the tunnel and surrounding area. It's funny how small the tunnel appears when lit, while in the dark of night it seems to go on forever. As I walked around I did notice car lights coming from the mountain in the distance but they were very far away and extremely small. They do not explain the groups of coloured lights I have seen on occasions at the tunnel.

The most significant event of the night and indeed of all the tunnel watches I've been a part of was the 'rock throwing'. After our halfway break, myself and two other participants broke away from the main group and set up our chairs further into the tunnel. During a patch of quiet we heard what sounded like a rock landing on gravel near where the bulk of the group sat. Several people yelled out and started asking who threw the rock. We knew it wasn't one of us. About ten minutes later, a very large rock hit the tunnel wall and landed next to us. Again, about five minutes later, what sounded like a handful of rocks pelted the wall. There were several more incidents and to be honest it was becoming very unnerving.

Once the tunnel watch came to an end I chatted with a few people. Everyone agreed that if someone in the group had thrown the rocks, you would have been able to hear the sound of their clothes rubbing or chair creaking. It is so incredibly quiet in the tunnel that any movement echos and generates a lot of noise. Also, the rocks were being thrown at both the large and small group. How could that be unless someone was in between us? One young girl described how one of the rocks hit her in the leg. Liz said that the rock throwing did happen from time to time, but not very often. It was a frightening occurance that no one could explain.

Update March 2002
Paranormal Australia team members Kelly, Sherylee, Ian and I took part in the March 2002 tunnel watch along with Christina and her husband Martyn, and Liz and John Vincent. It was the smallest group we'd ever been with on a tunnel watch.

We did see several flashes of coloured light outside the tunnel. At one point a bright flash only metres away from me made me jump, but I can't say for sure if that actually happened or if it was my eyes playing tricks on me. Unfortunately, it was a quiet night and there is nothing else to report. Once our video footage and film has been reviewed we will post the results.

One thing we did discuss was the rock throwing incidents from the previous tunnel watch. Christina and Martyn were both at the December 2001 tunnel watch and they sat with the main part of the group. They said they heard no sounds coming from anyone. They both agreed that if someone from their group had thrown rocks, they would have been able to hear it. Ian, who had never been to a tunnel watch before, commented that we could hear each other's stomachs rumbling it was so quiet, again confirming the fact that if someone had thrown a rock you would have heard movement.

What a mystery!
