I was lucky enough to get the chance to visit beautiful Studley Park House in September 2001 with a small group of paranormal researchers and a spirit medium. While I was waiting for the rest of the group to arrive, I decided to take photographs of the exterior of the building and the spectacular views. As I walked around the grounds, I felt as though someone was watching me from the windows of the second floor even though I knew that house was locked up and completely empty. I was later told that this sensation was also experienced by the other people in the group.
I was absolutely stunned at how beautiful the inside of this house is, even though it is badly in need of repairs and restoration work. The entrance is decorated with painted glass windows depicting birds, flowers and fruit entwined in intricate twists of coloured glass. The flooring is made up of complex patterned tiles and polished wooden floorboards. The walls are adorned with panels, inlays and cornices. The staircase is breathtaking with its dark wood balustrades and massive stained glass window. Each main room had its own distinctly unique fireplace decorated with polished marble and hand painted tiles. I guess you could say it is very over the top in a typical Victorian way. When I first walked into the house, I noticed something very unusual. The air seemed to have what I can only describe as electricity to it, which felt kind of like the way clothes that are full of static electricity feel against your skin. This is a feeling I've never experienced before in all the reportedly haunted locations I've been in. I have no idea what it was and would be very interested to hear if anyone else out there has experienced something similar. It was a very windy day and the house creaked and groaned almost constantly. At times it was quite loud and sounded like people stomping around the second floor of the house and down the stairs. It was very unnerving and definitely added to the atmosphere, but unfortunately it made our sound recordings useless. The spirit medium told us said that there were several presences in the house, the most dominant being that of a large, older male. She thought he originated from when the house was used by the Department of Defence, and was possibly an officer. As strange as it may sound, I did somehow feel as if there was a male presence around me looking over my shoulder while I was walking around and taking photographs of the house. I didn't feel threatened in any way and, in fact, felt quite comfortable and welcome there.
