Maitland Gaol - 5 Wing

[ Index: Maitland Gaol -- 5 Wing -- C Wing -- A Wing ]

I found that one of the most active areas of the gaol was surprisingly the newest wing. 5-Wing was built in 1993 and housed prisoners who had committed the most heinous crimes or serious crimes against other prisoners. These prisoners had no social contact and were confined to their own cells and exercise yards. Located at the end of the wing was a clinic for inmates drying out or forthose who had swallowed dangerous objects and drugs in order to hurt themselves or conceal prohibited items or substances from the prison officers.

While I was waiting for film crew outside the entrance to 5-wing, I noticed one of the cell doors moving. Curiosity got the better of me and I went for a wander down the long hallway. The cell block was completely empty. At first I thought it might have been the wind but after investigating I realized that the thick metal door was way too heavy to be moved by the slight breeze in the corridor.

After enquiring if that particular cell had a significant history, I was told that this was where George Savvas hanged himself. His lifeless body was found the day after an unsuccessful escape attempt with fellow inmate Ivan Milat in 1997.

I spent quite a bit of time wandering around this area and when the rest of the crew finally arrived I was standing inside Savvas' cell.

Someone shut the door and I heard the bolt being locked. As it was daytime and there was plenty of light flooding in through a large window, I was feeling quite comfortable. Until I heard a strange noise coming from behind me. At first I wasn't sure what I was hearing. It sounded like someone panting heavily. Although the sound only went on for about 4 or 5 seconds, it was long enough for me zone in and focus on what I was hearing. As ridiculous as it may sound, I am certain the sound was of a man panting. I was frozen to the spot and it took a moment for me to muster up enough courage to turn around. Of course I was alone. As I turned back around the cell door opened and I rushed out explaining what had happened.

A member of the film crew volunteered to be locked in the room, but did not experience anything out of the ordinary.

That night I set up my infrared video camera at one end of 5-Wing and left it running for half an hour or so. Although there are some loud clicking and banging noises that I can't explain, no movement of any kind was captured.
